Volunteer State Community College (Vol State), with a student enrollment of over 7,600 students, is located 30 miles northeast of Nashville in Gallatin. Numerous off-campus operations extend the college’s instruction and public service roles throughout its 12-county service area. Popularly known as Vol State, the college was founded in 1971. It has a diverse mix of students ranging in age from teens to senior adults. They come from counties across the service area, many states around the nation, and more than 25 countries. Vol State has more than 70 programs in five grand divisions: Humanities, Social Science and Education, Health Sciences, Business and Technology, and Math and Science.
Vol State holds the distinction of being recognized as a 2015 Military Friendly® higher education institution for exemplary practices in recruiting and supporting post-military students.
The college has an open admissions policy and offers credit for life experiences.
